Korsman grabs attention of rare visitor
People from as far as Nelspruit are flocking to the Korsman Bird Sanctuary to view a rare visitor, a bar-tailed godwit.
Rolf Wiesler spotted the bird on October 7 and reported the sighting to SA Rare Bird News.

“Since then, twitchers from as far as Nelspruit have been flocking to see this Arctic summer migrant which is normally recorded at the coast,” said Jane Trembath, chairperson of the Korsman Conservancy.
It’s one of only a few times the species has been recorded in Gauteng.
While the bird is still at Korsman, it is usually seen in the shallow water areas of the pan where it is finding plenty to eat to restock after its long journey south.
In 2007 a study recorded them completing nonstop flights of 11 000km, the longest by any bird, Trembath said.
