Two women die, 14 others injured in accident
Two women died and approximately 14 other people were injured this afternoon (October 27) when a taxi and truck collided on Holfontein Road, near Etwatwa.
ER24 paramedics, along with other services, arrived on scene at 12.15pm to find the wrecked taxi in the middle of the road.
The truck was found parked a short distance away on the side of the road.
“Both vehicles had sustained a large amount of damage in the collision,” said ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring.
“Upon closer inspection, paramedics found the bodies of two women lying trapped inside the taxi.”
Both women had already succumbed to their multiple injuries.
Meiring said the driver of the taxi was found lying trapped inside the vehicle while approximately 13 other people were found either in the taxi or walking around on scene.
“Assessments showed that the taxi driver and two other women had sustained critical injuries, while 11 others had sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate,” Meiring added.
Fire service had to use the Jaws-of-Life equipment to free the driver from the vehicle while paramedics treated the patients and provided the critically injured with advanced life support interventions.
Once treated, the patients were transported to various hospitals for further treatment.
The driver of the truck escaped injury.
The exact cause of the collision is not yet known.
