A winning essay makes Daveyton resident proud

In August, Vusumuzi Ernest Nhassengo entered the Language Festival Roadshow essay competition hosted by Unisa and won third place.

The competition was open to high school learners, and the college received 57 entries.

Learners were invited to write an essay on whether multilingualism in South Africa is a resource or a problem.

Nhassengo wrote his last matric paper on November 27 and was a learner at BB Myataza Secondary School in Daveyton.

“I was inspired by the challenging topic as it was my first time writing an argumentative essay, so I decided to take on the challenge and see how far I could go writing it,” he said.

The 18-year-old wrote an essay about multilingualism in South Africa being a resource.

“I spoke about how the varieties of languages in South Africa can be a tourist attraction and contribute to the economy and how the many languages portray the history of our country,” Nhassengo said.

Nhassengo said winning a prize made him proud.

“When I received a phone call saying that I had won a prize, it didn’t quite sink in at that moment, but after a couple of hours I was dazed that I actually made it,” he said.

“I smiled alone in amazement and broke the news to my family, who became so excited about my achievement.

“Knowing that I made it made me happy and more confident about my writing – I was proud of myself.”

Nhassengo received certificates and monetary prizes.

“My certificate will help me on my curriculum vitae, and I will use my prize money to help pay for some of the required fees at a higher institution to further my studies,” he said.

“My goal is to become a computer scientist or a teacher to help other students achieve their goals too.”
