The site for the Benoni 77 IR (Mackenzie Park Extension Three) project is situated in the eastern part of Ekurhuleni, approximately 1.5km east of the Benoni CBD.
According to Sinethemba Matiwane, Ward 73 councillor, the land is owned by the Department of Public Works.
“Therefore, a power of attorney from the Department of Public Works is required for the approval of the layout plan,” Matiwane said.
“The opening of the township register is subjected to the power of attorney, which the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) is busy negotiating.”
In the meantime, the TIA and EIA have begun and are estimated to be concluded by May 2018.
“It is mandatory for these assessments to be completed so we know what the land can be used for,” Matiwane added.
“An amended EIA has been submitted to the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) and the process is still ongoing.”
In the progress report, which the City Times has seen, the Department of Public Works hopes to build 9 200 houses consisting of various typologies.
Matiwane asked residents to consider the benefits for them from this development.
“I would like to urge residents to visit their nearest municipal customer care centre or human settlements head office (corner Howard and Wilstead streets in Benoni) to register their names for housing opportunities that may arise from this development,” he said.
