Metro responds to swimming pool complaints
The EMM responds to a number of concerns regarding Benoni Northerns Swimming Pool.
After a series of questions from The City Times about Benoni Northerns Swimming Pool, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) has given reasons for the pool’s condition.
The City Times queried why no entrance fee was required when we visited the pool.
“The reason for free entry is that the access control system is out of order and a purchase order for repairs was sent to the contractor on February 19,” said EMM spokesperson Themba Gadebe.
“Entrance fees are not used for maintenance, the income from swimming pools forms part of the total annual return for the city.”
Gadebe also said painting of the walls of the pool will start on April 1.

“The City’s swimming pools receive an annual operational budget and have to prioritise maintenance for each financial year accordingly,” Gadebe said.
According to a complaint received from a community member about swimming attire, a lady was seen wearing white in the pool which went see-through, while another was fully clothed.
Gadebe responded as follows: “Some ladies and our Muslim bathers wear a T-shirt and shorts to be more covered and also Muslim attire which means fully clothed swimwear.
“It must however be noted that some of our bathers are of low income and do not always have the best swimwear available.”
Gadebe also said the ablutions are cleaned daily.
“The ablutions are cleaned throughout the day, but after 400 people go through there with wet feet and costumes, it is obvious that it would not be super clean at the end of a day.”
