“I couldn’t believe it at first,” he said.

“My coach burst into tears.”

Pillay represented Gauteng along with his teammates.

The Brentwood Park resident hopes to break the 42.60 seconds record in the u-17 age category.

“I have two years to work on that,” he said.

The former Arbor Primary School learner has been participating in inter-house athletics since Grade One.

His secret to success is his dedication to training three to four times a week and eating healthily.

“He even refused to go away for the holidays. He said he wanted to stay home and train,” said his mother, Beverly Pillay.

The youngster said: “My sporting career is my main goal.”

“I want to compete with Wayde van Niekerk and all those great athletes.”

As a backup plan to the sport, Pillay plans to study and become an orthopaedic surgeon or an accountant.

Pillay’s advice to other athletes is: “Believe before you achieve.”
