14 greyhounds confiscated by the SPCA
The SPCA educated pet owners before confiscating the animals.
Fourteen greyhounds were confiscated under the warrant of SPCA Inspector Shiven Bodasing on Wednesday (May 9).
The confiscation took place at the Actonville/Wattville hostel after the Benoni SPCA educated owners about how to properly care for their pets.

“A written warning was subsequently issued, stipulating the problems needing to be rectified,” said Benoni SPCA manager, Vicky Finnemore.
“After no compliance, our inspectors seized the distressed animals, by force.”
According to Finnemore, the inspectors worked quickly, as the crowd gathered and became very unsettled, exponentially increasing the volatility of the situation.
The Actonville SAPS were also on scene to monitor the confiscations.
“Several of the animals were taken for medical treatment for injuries and parasite infestation,” Finnemore said.
“We have reason to suspect, that the animals had been used for the purpose of breeding and illegal hunting.”
Finnemore reminded pet owners that animal cruelty is a criminal offence and falls into the same schedule as crimes such as robbery, rape and murder.
“We urge the community of Benoni to report abuse and neglect of animals to the Benoni SPCA,” she said.
“The owners of the greyhounds will be prosecuted.”
