Gauteng Hawks spokesperson Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu said all five men are facing charges of armed robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of illegal firearms and explosives and ammunition, malicious damage to property and attempted murder.
Meanwhile, the South African Banking Risk Information Centre (Sabric) has applauded the decision taken by the national assembly portfolio committee on police to hold a special meeting on cash-in-transit (CIT) heists, scheduled for June 13.
“As an organisation whose members comprise of CIT companies, Sabric is gravely concerned and alarmed about the crisis proportions CIT attacks have reached.
“This negatively impacts on the country and economy, investor confidence, our member banks and CIT companies, the public and society,” said Kalyani Pillay, CEO of Sabric.
Pillay said Sabric is actively engaged in collaborative threat surveillance, risk detection and tactical support with relevant authorities to stop the attacks.
“However, more needs to be done. This is why we welcome the proactive oversight and leadership by the portfolio committee during its meeting with SAPS national leadership held on May 17.”
Sabric is calling for such heists to be treated as a priority crime, and for the systematic compilation of cases that are prosecutable by the NPA and establishing dedicated provincial CIT investigation teams.
On Sunday, police launched a manhunt for about eight armed suspects following a cash-in-transit heist at Southdale Shopping Centre, just outside the Johannesburg CBD.
It was believed that the driver was approached by about eight suspects who pointed at him with firearms‚ forcing him to open the cash van.
The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.
No arrests have yet been made.
