#knowyourbenoni -Tania Forrest-Smith is more than a lover of bunnies

Meet Tania who loves more than bunnies.

Benoni knows her as a lover of bunnies, but there is a lot more to Tania Forrest-Smith (56) of Northmead.

Tell us about your life growing up?

I was born in Maitland in Cape Town and went to Boston Primary and Settlers High schools. I am married to Mark Forrest-Smith who actively supports my animal ventures. I am blessed with four children and seven grandchildren.

What do you do as a hobby apart from mothering bunnies?

I love to bake for other people and I also love to paint abstract paintings. I am on the Ward 27 committee and the organisation NAR Anon forms a big part of my life as my son is a recovering addict – we’re extremely proud that he has been clean for four years and six months. I love to read James Patterson, only, if there were just enough hours in the day and am also very involved with PTSD counselling. I suffer from the chronic disease ulcerative colitis, so I am involved in support groups.

Tell us about your love for bunnies:

Ironically, when I started volunteering at the Bunny Park three years ago my passion was for the farm animals.

However, when the farm animals were removed from the park, someone had to take care of the bunnies.

The first bunny I brought home was love at first sight. It was an instant connection as they bond so easily with a human being. Most from the Bunny Park had never experienced love before, which I could now give them.

Do you now only take care of bunnies?

Absolutely not. I am well-known for my love of Jack Russells and all of mine are rescues.

I’m also involved in a project which provides kennels for township dogs without shelter and am a director of Critter Rescue SA, which rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes guinea pigs, rats, hamsters and lizards.

What are your future plans?

To continue saving animals in need and helping organisations in need. Ideally, I dream of owning a plot which would become a sanctuary for abused animals.
