South African People’s Forum (SAPF) held a fund-raiser in aid of the Actonville Senior Citizens on August 4 at the Seva Samaj Hall in Actonville.

The forum hosted 60 senior citizens on the day.

The aim of the fund-raiser was to raise funds that will provide the seniors with adult basic education and training (ABET) and mobility.

The Actonville Senior Citizens is a non-profit organisation founded in 2010 which provides home-based care and support, counselling, anti-elder abuse programmes and a mobile clinic.

The SAPF is a support structure under the Actonville Senior Citizens which helps in achieving the vision of the old, frail and terminally ill citizens.

SAPF chairperson Sarojadevi Rajah said they want to teach the elders how to read and write as some of them live with their grandchildren and they can’t assist them with homework.

“We also want to raise funds to purchase a vehicle that will transport them from home to the clinic to get their medication,” said Rajah.

On the day, various speakers shared words of wisdom with the elders and several awards were given to community members who have made a difference in the community.

The musical duo of Jazzy Vibes, Ashwan Reggie and Dushan Pillay, entertained the Actonville Senior Citizens.

The top women of the year awards for community development and service towards the aged were received by SAPF chairperson Sarojadevi Rajah and Denise Francis, founder of the Actonville Senior Citizens.

Guest speaker Natvarlal Kalan said old people are viewed as unimportant, especially by the youth.

“They are made to feel like they are unwanted and that needs to change because they have lots of wisdom and skills that can be passed to the younger generation,” said Kalan.

The senior citizens were entertained with dance, music and they also received a meal.
