Decades of service to the elderly by stellar Matron

Care and compassion are her forte

Dignity, care and comfort is the vision of the Old People’s Home in Benoni CBD that is shared by the residents and staff alike, and more so, by Matron Lindiwe Moahloli.

Moahloli has worked at the Home for 21 years.

Her journey started in February 1997 when she started working there as a sister.

By 2003 she was appointed the matron of the home and has not looked back since.

“I did not think I would be here for so long,” said a reminiscent Moahloli.

“The love of the residents has kept me here and my journey so far has taught me so much.

“It has taught me about love, relationships and bonds, life, the future and even death.”

Moahloli explained that by gaining exposure to the home over the years, she developed a close bond with the residents, most of whom are old enough to be of her parents’ age.

“The relationship allows for them to become like your own people,” she said.

“You feel their pain when they are not keeping well and when they are happy, so are you.”

The home, which comprises of retirement cottages, mid-care and frail-care facilities, according to Moahloli, oversees 115 residents at present.

In her time at the home, Moahloli has worked in all the facilities.

“Sometimes I just pop into the cottages to say a simple hi to the residents so they know how much we care about them,” she explained.

“When there is a problem, I try my best to be involved and effective in any way possible.

“These residents are very close to my heart.”

The manager of The Old People’s Home, Kim Mortlock, said the compassion showed by matron was, in her view, simply incredible.

“I can’t live without her,” said Mortlock.

“She’s just got this undeniable compassion and empathy and it shows day in and day out.

“Of course, she runs a tight ship and that is also something that I admire about her.”

Resident Lillian Risseeuw said she found the matron to be extremely friendly, chatty and made her smile and laugh with the many jokes she tells.

“She makes us feel very comfortable here,” said Risseeuw.

When asked if she plans on retiring at the home, Moahloli responded with an emphatic “yes!”
