Love your bones this October
Celebrate good bone health by ensuring that you and your family follow a balanced diet every day and, where necessary, take supplements to boost your physical well-being, not only for today but for many years in the future, and not only for yourself but for generations to come.

On October 20, the globe will acknowledge World Osteoporosis Day and calls on everyone to love their bones and protect their future.
Affecting nearly 33 per cent of women and 25 per cent of men, osteoporosis is an under-diagnosed and under-treated silent disease.
Being the only non-profit, voluntary health organisation dedicated to promoting lifelong bone health in South Africa, the National Osteoporosis Foundation of South Africa (NOFSA), is dedicated to increasing awareness of osteoporosis.

Facts about osteoporosis
• Osteoporosis is the hidden, underlying cause of painful, debilitating and life-threatening fractures.
• The most common of osteoporotic fractures are spine (vertebral) fractures; a major cause of pain, disability and loss of quality of life.
• Up to 70 per cent of spine fractures remain undiagnosed, leaving sufferers unprotected against the high risk of more fractures.
• Back pain, height-loss and a stooped back are all possible signs of spine fractures.
• A family history of osteoporosis and broken bones is a sign that you too may be at higher risk.
• Osteoporosis is a growing global problem that respects no boundaries. Worldwide, fractures affect one in three women and one in five men over the age of 50.
“Osteoporosis is a serious condition caused by the thinning of bones and can lead to bone fractures. There is a serious misconception that osteoporosis is a normal part of aging,” said Teréza Hough, CEO of NOFS.
Although it is mostly age-related, it is not exclusive to the senior population and, more importantly, it can be prevented by a healthy lifestyle and good nutrition from an early age.
“We need to create good eating habits that will not only influence our health in years to come but also those of our children.”
