Creating awareness about cancer
The support groups also provide support to families, caregivers and friends who are affected by cancer.
The East Rand based CanSurvive Support Group will be hosting a cancer awareness campaign on November 21 at Daveyton Mall.
The support group is in need of the following donations: T-shirts (for a minimum of 60 per sponsor with branding), banners, financial support and refreshments for the attendees.
Ronnie Nkabinde, a prostate cancer survivor and CanSurvive director said their slogan for the event is “Bringing the fight against cancer to the people”.

“With this event we aim to educate the community about the importance of the early detection of cancer,” said Nkabinde.
“We also want to promote our support groups so that people who have been diagnosed can know where to go instead of being left in the lurch.”
CanSurvive which is a member of the Prostate Cancer Foundation has support groups in Daveyton, KwaThema, Tsakane and at the Far East Rand Hospital.
Nkabinde said the aim of the support groups is for patients to share their experiences, concerns and obtain support and useful information from others who have been through similar experiences.
On the day males will be tested for prostate cancer and females for breast cancer.
Organisations such as the PinkDrive, Cancervive and others will also be present to provide the community with information about cancer.
“It is important for residents to know their cancer status as cancer can be beaten if detected at an early stage,” he said.
The event will be held from 10am until 2pm and entrance is free.
Nkabinde said the support group doesn’t have agents or people who are sent to collect donations from companies or individuals.
