All work and no play makes Benoni a dull place. That is why the CPF held a Family Fun Day for work and play on November 3 at the Benoni Northerns Sports Club.
Foods and goods were on sale at the several stalls so families could enjoy a good meal while being entertained and informed about serious situations.
Reza Patel, executive chairperson of the Ekurhuleni Central Cluster CPF, prepped families for the three demonstrations by SAPS, EMPD K9 Unit and Emergency Medical Services.
Demonstration one was a man taken hostage. The man was no other than Patel himself who played the part of a businessman who stole R5-million. The man he stole it from took him hostage, threatening to kill him and demanding his money.
If such a situation occurred, the hostage is advised to stay calm to avoid angering the captor.
The police are alerted and acknowledge the captor’s demands but not promise anything as yet.
Bystanders should stay off the scene but give police any information they have.

The first responder will hand over to the negotiator, however, if the situation seems to get out of hand, the Tactic Task Team will take over and apprehend the captor.
An investigation is then opened.
The EMPD K9 Unit demonstrated how their dogs are trained to find anything they are looking for. One such dog is the German shepherd, Gabi, that is trained to be an explosive-detection dog.
EMPD K9 inspector Willem van Zyl showed the crowd how Gabi sniffs to find an explosive hidden in a beacon.
Gabi is also trained to sit next to any explosive to avoid triggering it by touching it.
Last, ER24 demonstrated how to safely remove a patient from a vehicle using Jaws of Life.
Brandon Scott, who is a paramedic, explained Jaws of Life is used to cut the doors or roof of the car in order to gain entry to get to the patient.
The rest of the day was filled with relaxation, fun, music and food.
