“Our primary focus for 2019 will be the youth – getting them to understand to importance of regular safe blood donation,” Benoni donor relations practitioner Terrance Pillay said.

“We will be hosting an educational session at all secondary schools during the year to encourage safe lifestyle and promote blood donation.

The requirements are:

• Weigh 50kg or more.

• 16 years and older.

• Lead a sexually safe lifestyle.

• Must have eaten in the last four hours.

“We often encourage our donors to donate a minimum of four times a year and if this is achieved donors normally receive a commitment gift on their fourth donation,” said Pillay.

“With units procured from regular donors, we are able to make more blood products.”

Blood can be donated every 56 days and platelets can be donated every 28 days.

Donors can visit the Benoni centre or contact them on 0800 119 031.

For a blood drive requests at your school, company or organisation you can contact Pillay on 011 897 4955.

“Only half an hour of someone’s time can make a difference in someone’s life,” Pillay.
