Rain: Ekurhuleni emergency services issues flood warning, safety tips
Pedestrians and children walking to school should be extra cautious.
Rain will continue to cover Gauteng until the weekend with the weather prediction being an 80 to 100 per cent chance of rain.
The district manager media liaison spokesperson for Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), William Ntladi, said they are alerting residents to the possibility of flooding in certain areas.

“Heavy rain may result in rivers, low lying bridges, open trenches, furrows, culverts and even canals to flood, causing damage to adjacent and down-stream areas that may not usually receive rainfall,” he said.
“Motorists and pedestrians must avoid subway bridges, low lying bridges and swollen streams where water is above ankle level,” Ntladi warned.
“If you can’t see the road surface because of the flood water, turn around and use an alternative road.”
Communities affected by flooding or any life-threatening emergencies are advised to call the emergency call centre immediately to render swift intervention:
• Emergencies: 011 458 0911 or cellphone 112.
• Ensure that you have the emergency call centre contact numbers readily and clearly displayed for everyone to know and to use.
• Numbers should be saved and easy to access on your telephone or cellular phone.
• Speak clearly on the phone when reporting an emergency.
• Provide the operators with all the necessary details required.
• Do not end the conversation until all questions are answered.
