After a week of verbal and written notices and warnings issued went unheeded by hawkers and car dealerships, the Benoni Precinct officers and traffic wardens impounded 19 vehicles and confiscated various items.
The Benoni CBD clean-up was conducted on February 19 after it was found the hawkers and car dealerships were contravening the National Road Traffic Act and the EMM’s by-laws.

“Hawkers obstructing sidewalks and obstructing traffic and pedestrians at intersections, as well as car dealers illegally displaying vehicles on sidewalks and roadways were targeted,” said EMPD spokesperson chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago.
“The special operation yielded 19 vehicles, braai stoves, chairs, tyres, items of clothing and footwear, as well as fruits and vegetables which were confiscated and taken to the EMPD storage facilities.”
“Car dealers are warned that the metro police will not stop towing away vehicles illegally parked on the public roads,” he concluded.
