EMPD makes 11 arrests from tip-off

Wilfred Kgasago said most of the suspects were identified through video footage from the businesses where they committed the robberies.

“The modus operandi was to send in two women to survey the business targeted, and, in turn, they signalled to the male accomplices to strike,” EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said upon the arrest of 11 suspects for a spate of business robberies.

The EMPD Tracing Unit members are still however, searching for a second woman who is allegedly involved in these crimes.

A tip-off was received on Tuesday, February 19, which led to the arrest of 10 men and one woman.

“Three handguns with ammunition, an explosive mortar and various items of goods suspected to have been taken during the robberies were recovered,” said Kgasago, who is also the chief superintendent.

“One suspect was cornered in Daveyton, three in Wattville, two in Etwatwa and five in Benoni.

“The suspect apprehended at a house in Eiselen Street in Daveyton led the metro police to a house in Etwatwa and to another house in Wattville whereupon three unlicensed handguns, ammunition, a mortar, 16 cellphones, various items of goods and cigarettes were found.”

“The gang targeted doctors’ rooms and Pakistani shops in Benoni CBD, Actonville, Daveyton and Wattville,” he added.

All 11 arrested suspects, aged between 21 and 32, were detained at Benoni Police Station charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, an explosive military mortar, suspected stolen goods and cellphones.

They are expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court soon.
