The family of an 80-year-old victim of an alleged hit-and-run in Brodigan Street, Northmead, last week, confirmed to the City Times recently, that they will be opening a criminal case in connection with the incident.
This comes after a video emerged on social media on February 18 showing the elderly woman being hit by a car while crossing the road.

She was on her way to work at the time and CCTV at Benoni Northerns Sport Club captured the incident. The driver stopped momentarily after the woman was hit and then flung onto the bonnet of the car and then onto the road, but the driver then drove off.
Claire Schoeman, who employs the victim as a domestic worker, said on February 21 neither their family nor her domestic helper would proceed with criminal charges against the unidentified driver, despite her employee having sustained minor injuries.
Two days later, however, the family member of the domestic helper confirmed to the City Times that they would, in fact, be opening a case.
Captain Nomsa Sekele of the Benoni SAPS said not reporting an accident only complicates matters for the police.
“We always ask the community to report such incidents immediately as this will only help the case,” explained Sekele.
“Not reporting the incident results in time and resources being wasted trying to collate information to build the evidence of the case.”
This, she added, has an overall effect on the case being delayed.
Sekele added that it is a serious offence to leave the scene of a crime.
“When you knock something down, be it a pedestrian, animal, cyclist or anything else, you are required to remain at the scene, report the incident and wait for the relevant authorities to arrive.”
