Councillors pass their condolences to Victor Penning’s family

Victor moved to Kensington and served the DA in Johannesburg for 12 years.

Benoni lost a gem on March 31 when former Benoni ward councillor Victor Penning (77) died in his sleep at his home in Kensington.

Vic, as he was lovingly known, was born in 1942 and lived in Benoni from 1970 until 1996.

The Victor Penning Bird Sanctuary in Cloverdene was named after him.

His son, Michael Penning, said: “He will be remembered for his dedication and commitment to council.”

His journey in council commenced in 1975 where he served in the Rynfield/Morehill area.

According to Benoni’s personal historian, Glynis Millett-Clay, in 1985 he was the secretary in the executive committee of the Benoni Publicity Association.

DA member Jack Bloom said that Victor was a stalwart DA public representative with a long history of dedicated service to the community.

“His passing is a great shock as he was energetic until the very end,” he added.

“My sincere condolences to his family, who should be comforted by all the good he did in this world.”

Ward 23 councillor André du Plessis said: “My sincere condolences to the family of the late councillor, Vic Penning, whom I knew as a colleague and keen fellow conservationist.

“His valuable participation in environmental issues will be greatly missed.”

According to the Citizen, the ANC on Monday sent a message of condolence on the passing of DA councillor Victor Penning.

The Citizen quoted regional party spokesperson Jolidee Matongo: “The ANC greater Johannesburg region is saddened by the passing of DA councillor Victor Penning. During his time in office, he remained an active member of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Council.

“He understood the importance of remaining true and honest to democratic processes.

“Clr Penning demonstrated leadership qualities during his tenure as a councillor in both the opposition benches and recently in the seat of government by endeavouring to bridge the chasms that divide people.”

He is survived by his daughter Cheryl Cost and sons Mark and Michael Penning.
