Prevent break-ins with these tips

Benoni police have issued a warning for all residents to be responsible about security.

The Benoni police have confirmed two house break-ins in Rynfield and Morehill during the night in the past week and again issued a warning for all residents to be responsible about security.

On April 14, a house in Jeffery Street, Morehill, was broken into while the family was asleep.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said the homeowner realised at about 7am the home had been broken into.

“The intruders gained entry into the house through a window in the living room and bent the burglar bars open,” she said.

The suspects took a stash of liquor, a plasma screen TV, a DVD player, a decoder and CDs.

On April 13, in Clarke Street, Rynfield, another break-in occurred; however, nothing was stolen.

Sekele said the complainant said one of the windows in the dining room was found wide open and the burglar bars bent.

“We urge residents to report all crime incidents, no matter how small,” Sekele said.

Tips for homeowners:

• Look at your home through a criminal’s eyes. Walk around your property and assess it for weak spots, both before and after dark.

• Look for anything that might make your home look appealing to a thief or that might make it seem easy to break into.

• Lock your doors and close windows. Install deadbolts on your doors, burglar bars on your sliding doors and secure locking windows.

• Light your home. Sensor lights outside make it difficult for thieves to hide in dark corners.

• Close curtains and blinds to prevent thieves from seeing into your home.

• Do not put empty boxes which contained expensive electronics out for recycling as this will signal to thieves that there is something expensive inside and that it’s worth their while to break in.

• Manage your deliveries. If you’re going away, cancel deliveries of newspapers and mail or ensure someone collects it daily. If you’re expecting a package when you’re not home, don’t leave a note for the delivery person. This is an obvious sign that no one is home.

• Work with your neighbours. Keep an eye on your neighbour’s property when they are away and ask them to do the same for you.
