Community urged to join personal growth course

The cost per person is R2 500, but free courses are on offer.

The Lifeline Ekurhuleni Personal Growth Course will commence on May 6 and members of the public are urged to attend the six-week course as a means of personal development.

Alphen Park resident and business owner Ed Hatton, who has been a counsellor at Lifeline for 14 years, described the course as a “game-changer”.

“I did the course in 2005,” said Hatton.

“I was in a bad place in my life as a close friend of mine had committed suicide and my business was not doing well.

“I faced financial issues and felt a lot of loneliness.

“An associate referred me to Lifeline.

“At the time I didn’t know much about the organisation and I was reluctant, but decided to try it out anyway.

“The first part of the course, back then, blew me away and led to me enthusiastically participating in it.

“It was very stimulating and something I didn’t realise I needed.

“You begin to learn things about yourself you didn’t know before.”

A few months after the course, Hatton said he saw his business not only becoming profitable again, but he had doubled his gains.

“Everyone has issues, whether they acknowledge it or not.

“There are things that hold you back from your full potential and this course helps you to realise this.”

Hatton highlighted the main focus points of the Ekurhuleni Personal Growth Course:

• Confidence

• Self-belief

• Better ability to interact and share with people

• Better ability to set goals and manage them.

“I get satisfaction from seeing others succeed.

“The course showed me that I should be proud of what I have accomplished thus far.”

Hatton said waiting for approval from others is something that holds people back the most.

“We measure our self-worth according to the amount of Instagram and Twitter followers and we automatically think this shows how successful we are.

“These are very shallow measures compared to measuring your success by yourself.”

Hatton added that the course is open to adults of all ages and is relevant to the fast-paced world people are exposed to.

“There is around 15 zettabytes (a unit of information equal to one sextillion) of information and this is growing constantly.

“Of course we need to be able to adapt to the influx of information and filter out what is necessary and needed in an ever-changing world.

“The personal growth course shows people where opportunities lie and how to make the most of them.”

The Personal Growth Course will take place at Lifeline Ekurhuleni at 3 Russel Street, Western Extension.
