The commissioning of the newly built reservoir in Etwatwa was briefly interrupted as executive mayor Clr Mzwandile Masina attended to the peaceful strike by members of the community recently.
He accepted a memorandum handed to him in which was requested that they could occupy the privately owned land next to the reservoir in Mandela Extension 19.
The R64.3-million building project includes a 10-megalitre reservoir, 1.1-megalitre water tower and pump station and was started in June 2016 and completed in 2018 (phase two).

The first phase was the construction of a booster pump station in Combiza to boost pressure coming from Vlakfontein Reservoir, which was completed and commissioned in August 2016.
The third phase of the project is already underway, which is the construction of a 1.1-megalitre water storage tower in Etwatwa Ext 19 scheduled to be completed in January 2020.
During his speech, Masina encouraged residents to safeguard the facility as it will serve them as well as their descendants.
Florence Letsholo, a resident from Etwatwa Ext Nine, said the new reservoir came as a relief following years of constant water supply interruption. She said it gave them hope that the metro has shown commitment to eradicating their water supply issues.
Masina also touched on the importance of the Aqua Leap programme aimed to address the water infrastructure failures and the water capacity constraints caused by the unmatched growth demand in the metro.
