Following a number of house robbery cases reported in the Daveyton area, the Daveyton SAPS encourages residents to build relationships with their neighbours. However, the station will intensify police visibility around the area.
Daveyton SAPS head of Vispol Lt Col Mack Mngomezulu said in all four sectors there have been a large number of robberies during the month of April were the culprits target houses were there isn’t anyone during the day.
“In other cases the robberies occur during the night when home owners are sleeping and they will only realise in the morning that there was a robbery,” said Mngomezulu.

“The suspects usually steal flat screen televisions and appliances.”
Mngomezulu said criminals are opportunists sometimes they will spot you at a shebeen or at a place of entertainment and they use that opportunity to go and break in at your house.
“In sector one, which is the Extension One, Two, Marivate and Esihlahleni area, there are also a lot of assault and domestic violence cases and most of them are reported from the liquor outlets, he said.
“In 50 per cent of those cases there are arrests and people are brought to justice.”
In sector two, which covers Mashanganeni, MaXhoseni, Swazi sections and some parts of the Zulu Section, street robberies with or without a firearm are the main crime contributors in the area.
Mngomezulu said most of these incidents occur in the early hours of the morning or late evenings when people are on their way to or from work.
“In the Daveyton area there is a lot of shebeens, pubs and taverns. Most people get robbed of their valuables when they come from these places,” said Mngomezulu.
“We urge residents not to carry their valuables such as cellphones and wallets in hand,” he said.
He added that the N12 towards the Esihlahleni off-ramp to Etwatwa is a hotspot for hijackings and armed robberies.
“There is a group of people that will give hitchhikers a lift, then rob them and drop them off along the way,” said Mngomezulu.
“The hijackings usually occur when someone has a breakdown or when they stop to ask for direction.”
He said people must always will be vigilant and rather ask for directions at the garage.
The Vispol head said in sector three, the Esgodi, Gabon informal settlement and Zulu section, there isn’t much crime except for house robberies which are a problematic in all sectors.
In sector four, Daveyton Mall, Sotho section and Chris Hani informal settlement, business robberies, assault and robberies are most problematic.
Mngomezulu said they will establish a business forum and create a relationship with business owners.
“We will provide them with warnings and prevention tips on how to upgrade their security in their stores,” he said.
“There is a crime prevention team that is patrolling the area and we will increase police visibility.”
