High tea raises funds for underprivileged learners

“We wanted to host a very inspirational morning for the women of the congregation and their friends and, at the same time, raise money for these food hampers,” Gasson said.

Benoryn FamilieKerk, in Rynfield, recently hosted a high tea at Hoërskool Brandwag to raise funds for food hampers for underprivileged learners from local schools.

Organiser Marlize Gasson explained these learners are looked after through a feeding scheme during school terms, but will not be afforded this during the upcoming school holiday, which is why they are making up hampers.

Thanks to an anonymous donor, they were able to provide 40 families with food hampers consisting of dry foods, vegetables, and sanitary products after the event.

Residents can also contribute to the fund-raising by supporting the church’s food sales on the last Friday of each month (except during the school holidays), on the premises at 36 Struben Street, where visitors will find delicious eats including pancakes, milktart, boerewors rolls, vetkoek and curry and rice.

Profits made at these sales are used to fund the food hampers.
