Ward 29 Clr Haseena Ismail says she is concerned about the placement of concrete blocks on Birmingham Street in Actonville.
The councillor said a project to create pedestrian lanes and a cycling lane on the street has been hampered by the inclusion of the blocks.

“The Department of Human Settlements started with a non-motorised transport (NMT) project running through three wards – Ward 29, 30 and 31,” she explained.
“The presentation to councillors stated paving a pedestrian lane and cycling lane.
“I had a meeting with residents of Birmingham Street, explaining the project and what it entailed.
“However, the department has now included concrete blocks on the pavement, which is causing major problems and unhappiness for residents.
“I have highlighted to the department the issues with the concrete blocks as this is causing major safety risks to residents and pedestrians, including schoolchildren.
“There have already been incidents of children falling and jumping from one concrete block to another as well as children using the blocks as a table to gamble on and people using the area now as a trading place.
“The objective of the NMT project was for paved areas as pedestrian lanes and a cycling lane.
“These concrete blocks defeat the purpose of the objective of this project.
“The safety issues have been highlighted to the department and the MMC for Human settlements as it’s an urban renewal project; however, the department is not addressing the matter.
“The only thing we as residents want is for the concrete blocks to be removed and the paving replaced so the holes can be closed.”
The Ekurhuleni metro was contacted for comment regarding the matter.
