Plaza demolition postponed
The Ekurhuleni metro have moved the date of the demolition which was set to take place in July 2019 to October 2019.
According to metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe, it was anticipated that demolition would be done by July, however, the contractors the metro uses to carry out the demolition work could not be secured on time.
“The metro apologises for any inconvenience caused,” he said.
As stated in a previous article in The City Times, the following parts of the Benoni Plaza are set to be demolished:
• The building formerly used as the Waterfall restaurant.
• The building formerly used as the Milky Lane restaurant.
• Dilapidated building structure adjacent to the building previously used as the Milky Lane restaurant.
• The closed underground ablution facility on Princess Avenue.
• The concrete roof lapa supported by pillars situated diagonally from the former Milky Lane restaurant will be filled up and levelled to prevent the water that has settled into the hollow spaces as well as the dumping of refuse.
• All other hollow areas/structures prone to being waterlogged and result in containment of refuse will also be filled up and levelled.

Licensing goes cash-free
Wadeville, Alberton and Boksburg licensing centres adopted the cash-free system in Ekurhuleni on August 1, where debit and credit cards will be the only acceptable form of payment at these licensing departments.
EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said the disadvantages associated with handling and keeping of huge amounts of cash have prompted the Ekurhuleni Metro to adopt a cash-free system in its licensing centres.
“The pilot project in this regard was the Kempton Park Licensing Centre which went cash-free on April 1. The intention is to roll out the system to all the metro’s licensing centres,” he said
Women in uniform honoured
Ekurhuleni City manager Dr Imogen Mashazi honoured women who are members of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department and Disaster and Emergency Management Services at an award ceremony on August 1.
The awards were introduced by the city manager in 2017 to pay tribute and celebrate women who have contributed to emancipation of women by defying the stereotypes that the law enforcement and disaster and emergency services jobs are suited to men.
The main objectives of the awards are to promote equal opportunities and better conditions for women in the workplace, employment equity, empower women with skills, career progression and academic progression.
The awards categories included Academic Excellence Award, Long Service Award and Team of the Year. Mashazi began the day by joining women metro police officers at a roadblock to share their experiences and show them support. She later donated mattresses, first aid kits and fire extinguishers to Siyazigabisa Home of Hope for Children in Tembisa.
