Benoni Lions Club receive books as a means for fundraising

President Tina Strachen was delighted to receive a call from the City Times editor Lana O'Neill after she had visited FMSA Waste Management and Recycling, in Brentwood Park, for a meeting with chief operations officer, Trevor Vercellotti.

The Benoni Lions Club recently salvaged a variety of books and greeting cards from a recycling company in Benoni, which they will be putting to good use to raise much-needed funds for community projects.

President Tina Strachen was delighted to receive a call from the City Times editor Lana O’Neill after she had visited FMSA Waste Management and Recycling, in Brentwood Park, for a meeting with chief operations officer, Trevor Vercellotti.

On the way out that day, Lana spotted several bundles of books which had been dropped off for recycling and asked Trevor whether she could contact the Lions to come and take some of the books for their book sales.

Passionate about the environment, and always willing to extend a helping hand to the community, Trevor was more than happy to oblige.

Tina visited the depot a few days later.

Tina Strachen, of Benoni Lions Club, receives the donation of books and greeting cards from Johan van Dyk of FMSA.

“I found some books in good condition, and also spotted a big bundle of brand new greeting cards, which was an added bonus.

“There is a wide variety and we are selling them at R5 each at our regular book sales.”

Tina thanked the City Times and FMSA for the kind gesture.

“Thank you both so much for thinking of us.

“Your kindness speaks volumes about the people living in our community who are willing to help us to help others who are much less fortunate.

“The kindness, courtesy and assistance that I was shown by FMSA staff is truly appreciated.

“I am glad that we could save the greeting cards from going to waste, and that we also did our bit for the environment.”

How you can help Benoni Lions Club

• Donate jumble. The club is in desperate need of donations for their jumble sales, which take place on the last Saturday of each month. Any items in reasonable condition – clothing, shoes, kitchenware and even furniture will be accepted and collection can be arranged. Contact VP Lion Carol

Lurie on 082 333 7897 or Lion Gill Jones on 082 342 7053.

• Donate books. Their regular book sales are an essential part of fund-raising for the club. Sales are held on the second Friday and Saturday of the month and the last Sunday of the month. Books should be in good condition and they welcome study guides/educational books.

• Buy a greeting card. These are very costly in stores at the moment so why not select a brand new one from the variety of cards the Lions are now also selling at R5 each?

• Donate hearing aids. There are many people in the community who cannot afford hearing aids and are therefore living a life of social isolation who the Lions can assist if they receive donations of hearing aids.

• Contact Tina Strachen on 083 251 4730 or liontina62@gmail.com for more information on any of the above.
