Homestart needs volunteers for charity shop
Funds collected from the charity shop go towards the organisation’s admin and operational costs
The Homestart charity shop in Mowbray Avenue has a range of goods on sale available to the public.
From the donations received for the shop, Homestart coordinator Dee Carton-Barber said they keep aside goods received for the families they cater for, and then sell off the other items.
“We have a list of needs from each family, and we collect goods received and match them against the list and keep the items aside for them,” Dee explained.

“These items include baby clothes and shoes, blankets and stationery.”
According to Dee, Homestart is responsible for 62 families and this includes their Daveyton branch.
Presently the shop, which is opened on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9am to 1pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1pm to 4pm and every second Saturday of the month from 9am to 12pm, is in need of volunteers.
“We sell items ranging from second-hand clothing, games, puzzles, kitchenware and more, and we are currently looking for volunteers to assist in the charity shop,” Dee explained.
“Another positive effect of the shop is that people come here and get to know their fellow community members as they shop and get to know each other, so it gives them something to do.
“We are also creating a mini economy as most people who come through to buy the clothes sell it back to their communities.
“In a month, we average around R12 000 in sales.”
Dee said the funds collected from the charity shop go towards the organisation’s admin and operational costs.
