TAG helps take care of pets in Zenzele informal settlement

One resident allowed them to take her dog for sterilisation, while another pet owner brought his weak dog that he thought might have eaten poison; the dog was rushed to the vet and is recovering in veterinary care.

The Animal Guardians (TAG) went out to Zenzele informal settlement as part of their outreach programme on August 22.

They have been visiting the informal settlement for almost five years to provide free sterilisations for the animals, dip baths, leashes, food at a low cost and, in rare cases, pay for veterinary care for animals that need it.

Residents were already lined up with their dogs once TAG arrived and all of them were assisted, either with food or getting their dogs vaccinated.

They run a monthly bill of about R120 000 at the vet. Since the opening of the self-supporting shelter five years ago, they have sterilised 11 000 animals and, according to Annalise Jungmann, founder of TAG, this is made possible by the hardworking staff (they are open seven days a week) and not forgetting the generous donations from the public and the fund-raisers they host.

TAG goes on outreach programmes twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) and residents can assist by donating money, food or items they can sell in their charity shop.
