Armed suspect fatally wounded in shootout with police in Actonville

"A physical struggle ensued between the two and the suspect was fatally wounded after he was shot in the upper body."

A case of attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm was opened at Actonville SAPS following a shootout between police and a suspect that led to the fatal wounding of the suspect (32) on October 16.

“Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) officers provided backup to a shooting in progress, which resulted in the fatal wounding of a suspect and recovery of a firearm,” confirmed BFS spokesperson WO Grant Giblin.

“Const Kgabo Ntshodisane and Const Basetsane Moumakwe of Actonville SAPS received a complaint at around noon about a suspect with a firearm in Kalipa Street.

“Upon their arrival, as they were driving towards Makau Street, a suspect started shooting at them.

“The officers stopped their vehicle and exited to return fire.

“The suspect fled among houses and the two officers immediately called for backup.

“Sgt Jaco Powell and Const Denovin Norman, both of BFS, were on patrol nearby and proceeded to the scene with other Actonville SAPS vehicles.

“With the backup arriving, the suspect was cornered between houses in Kalipa, Gola and Makau streets and continued sporadically firing at officers.

“Norman entered a premises and at the back of the house came face to face with the armed suspect.

“A physical struggle ensued between the two and the suspect was fatally wounded after he was shot in the upper body.

“A 9mm firearm was recovered from the suspect.

“No officers were seriously injured during the shootout.

“The public is thanked for their immediate response in calling police to warn of a suspect carrying a firearm in Actonville.

“Only with community assistance can we combat the crime scourge.

“Criminals must be warned that any attack on a police official is a serious offence.”
