Lightning strike leaves Farrarmere pensioner shaken

She had not even realised the damage which had been caused to a concrete wall adjoining her cottage to the main house.

A Farrarmere pensioner was left traumatised after a lightning strike sent pieces of a concrete wall flying in all directions recently before causing an “explosion” in her bedroom.

Bets Addis, who lives in Gamtoos Street, said she was sitting in the lounge of her home watching TV, aware that the weather had turned nasty.

“It was around 6pm when a tremendous flash of light appeared in my bedroom door, only metres from where I was sitting.

“The electricity tripped and I when I went outside to tell my daughter what had happened I saw a plume of smoke hanging in the air and there was an overwhelming smell of sulphur,” Addis said.

The lighting had damaged the wall in at least eight places, tearing chunks of concrete out and shooting them across the garden and into the back door of the main house.

“When it struck my bedroom all I saw was a massive flash of light and there was a deafening noise – like a bomb explosion. I was terrified.

“My poor little dog was also shivering and shaking for hours afterwards,” said Addis.

The lighting strike tripped the electricity and damaged a TV and the alarm system.

“I can only thank God I was not in my bedroom or outside at the time.

“Incredibly, there is no damage in my bedroom.”
