Police urge residents not to use stream near Daveyton Road

A case of carjacking was opened at the Benoni Police Station.

Benoni police are urging residents to avoid using the water stream at an open veld near Daveyton Road.

This comes after several cases of carjacking and robberies were reported recently.

Spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said on November 9 three brothers driving a white Ford Figo parked the vehicle at the open veld while they went to the water stream to pray.

“When they were done, as they walked back to their vehicle, they were approached by four men,” said Sekele.

“One of the men pointed a firearm at the brothers; the other three searched them and took the car keys.

The four men drove off with the vehicle and cellphones, which were inside.

A case of carjacking was opened at the Benoni Police Station.

Sekele explained that community members use the water stream to perform their cultural rituals, but it is dangerous as criminals are opportunists.

“We understand that to others these rituals are important, but we are pleading with them to avoid going there in the early hours of the morning or late in the afternoon.”
