Noise march held in Daveyton to create awareness

Only whistles were permitted on the day for creating noise.

The iThemba Rape and Trauma Support Centre hosted its noise march in Daveyton on November 29 in a bid to create awareness for the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign.

The annual campaign, which started on November 25 and runs until December 10, highlights the severity of women and child abuse and is used as a platform to create awareness for the cause.

Various stakeholders, such as Correctional Services, EMPD, Ekurhuleni metro employees, the Police Pastors’ Forum and community members, joined the march that started at the Sinaba Stadium in Eislen Street and ended at the Daveyton Mall, at Victor Ndlazulwane Hall.

iThemba public relations officer Rose Maja said apart from the march, she would also be visiting the Boksburg prison during this time to talk to men about the 16 Days of Activism campaign.

“Some men think because girls are wearing a mini skirt, short dress or because they (men) buy the girls alcohol they can rape them.

“We are using various opportunities to debunk this myth.

“Members of the community should use all platforms available to make their voices heard when it comes to abuse.

“Abuse is unacceptable.

“Use the avenues and channels available to you to report abuse.”

The team at iThemba reiterated that men can and are equally affected by rape and other forms of abuse just as women and children are.
