The Benoni SPCA confiscated seven greyhounds on January 24 from an owner in Etwatwa after it was discovered that the dogs were being used for hunting.

The complaint started in October 2019 and the owner was issued several warnings to comply by improving the dogs’ living conditions, which he complied with during a follow-up visit.

During a later follow-up, the owner said he had sent the dogs home to Limpopo and no dogs were seen on the premises.

In January 2020, a new complaint was received from the same address and the dogs were found to be kept in disgusting conditions.

After failing to comply with a warning issued, the decision was made to obtain a warrant to confiscate.

On return, most of the dogs had been hidden, and while investigating, a second address was found and a second warrant had to be obtained for the new address.

Inspectors successfully completed the confiscation and all dogs were taken for veterinary assessment and treatment.

The dogs will not be returned to the owner.
