Daveyton artist wants to help others

Daveyton resident Tebogo Qhingana (27) has become what he always wanted to be – an artist.

He discovered his love for art during his early childhood, and in 2013 he was commissioned to create art part-time.

The self-taught painter wants to give back to the community by giving free lessons to youngsters who are not given the platform to use their skills, and who are determined and willing to learn.

“Not to getting the necessary information and support from my family to do art have always been a problem for me,” said Qhingana.

“I was forced to do science which I never loved, but because I needed to obey my parents I pursued it. However, during my free time I would paint, which eventually persuaded them that it was not a hobby, but a career to me.”

Qhingana’s company, Visualkhoor, was established in 2017 after receiving a commission from Artem Gallery in Cape Town.

“All my paintings have a concept behind them. They explore spiritual thoughts and social issues faced by a certain culture,” he added.

Last year, Qhingana entered the Thami Mnyele Fine Arts Awards, where he was one of the Top 100 finalists.

“It was a privilege to be recognised in the competition. It has always been my dream to have my name written down among the greats in the industry.”
