Lakewest guards boast new eco-friendly hut

The entrance into the secure suburb has been named in remembrance of Adrian Welsh

On July 18, the Lakewest Residents’ Association welcomed a unique new guard hut in Woburn Avenue, Western Extension, with hopefully many more to come.

The new hut is not like any normal hut as it is entirely made out of recycled material, such as plastic boards and toothpaste tubes for the walls, and the frame is made out of scrap metal from old vehicles. The only items that are new are the windows and doors of the hut.

“We weren’t sure if we would be done on time, and due to Covid-19 weren’t able to make a huge deal about it,” said Glynis Holdsworth, a member of Lakewest.

On the day, they were only able to have their sponsors and members there for the grand opening of the new guard hut, but this didn’t stop the laughter and joy as the ribbon was cut by Cedric Welsh, who paid for the guard hut.

The entrance into the secured area is named in remembrance of Welsh’s son, Adrian.

The other sponsors are Chris Liebenberg (Elite Energy Solutions), Infinite made all the recycled board and then assembled the hut, an anonymous donor sponsored the 11 cameras and SJJ Installation sponsored labour for the electrical components for access control.

“With the guard hut being made out of recycled material, it seems to control the temperature as well, so in winter it will be nice and warm for our guards and during summer nice and cool,” said Holdsworth.

Ivonne Taylor, owner of Lemongrass Restaurant in Western Extension, recently launched a revitalisation project in the area which included concrete dustbins filled with beautiful geraniums being placed all over Western Extension.

Some of these have now also been stationed around the guard hut to keep the revitalisation project alive.

“We are very excited about this guard hut and we hope to be able to do this to all boom gates that fall under Lakewest,” said Holdsworth. “The hut is waterproof, fire resistant, warm and cool and I think our security guards will be very happy with what has been accomplished.”
