One motorist was injured and another succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital after they were hit by stray bullets when a CIT security guard was robbed at SuperBet Exchange, Benoni CBD, on July 25.
Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said G4S security guards arrived at the betting store to collect money.
“One of the guards went inside and when he came out with a money bag, he was approached by a group of armed men who started shooting randomly,” said Sekele. “The guard ran for cover and left the bag, which the robbers took.
“The robbers were running to their getaway vehicles and shooting randomly so that motorists and bystanders could get out of their way. Two motorists were hit in the upper body by the stray bullets as the suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash,” she said.
They fled in a white bakkie with an unknown registration number.
It is unclear how many robbers were involved. A case of murder and CIT robbery were opened at the Benoni Police Station.
Police urge anyone who may have information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects to come forward and report it (anonymously if you wish) – use the MYSAPS app, call Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or the Benoni police station on 011 747 0000.
