Respected Northmead supermarket owner dies

Vingos and his son, Mario, took ownership of their first Pick n Pay store, in Brixton, Johannesburg

Nikolaos “Nick” Vingos, the owner of Oakfields Pick n Pay, in Oak Street, Northmead, died on August 7.

The family declined to disclose the cause of his death.

Vingos was 73 years old.

He was born on May 24, 1947, and came to South Africa from a small village in Kalamata, Greece, arriving in Johannesburg speaking very little English.

According to the family, Vingos began his long and successful career in retail as an employee of Pandoras Café, in Springs.

“His determination to make a life and home in South Africa was evident in his strong work ethic and commitment to those around him,” a family spokesperson said.

In 1997, Vingos and his son, Mario, took ownership of their first Pick n Pay store, in Brixton, Johannesburg. They bought the Oakfields store in 2006, which, the family said, has gone on to be a successful franchise store.

“His staff loved and adored him, but Nick’s greatest achievement was as a family man. Those that know him, know that he lived and breathed for his family.”

Vingos is survived by his wife, Maggie, and three children, Gina, Mario and Stephanie.

“His greatest legacy is his five grandchildren. Those that loved him will miss him.”
