Huge haul of illegal cables confiscated by EMPD

The recovered cables were taken to the Benburg substation in Petit for safekeeping.

The EMPD Anti-Cable Theft, Equestrian Unit Members together with the Ekurhuleni metro energy department technicians and other law enforcers confiscated illegally connected electrical cables on October 16 at Msholozi informal settlement.

The operation was conducted from 8am to 2pm.

A total of 2673, 63 meters of aluminum electrical wire supplying the informal settlement were connected illegally, valued at R 3 2775 was retrieved from lampposts, mini-substations, and ditches.

EMPD Spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng said this came after they received numerous complaints from members of the community and this is an ongoing operation.

The recovered cables were taken to the Benburg substation in Petit for safekeeping.
