Daveyton teen’s leg amputated after hit-and-run incident

A case of reckless and negligent driving was opened at the Benoni Police Station.

A Daveyton teenager, Samantha Ndlovu (13), is struggling to adjust to a life-changing injury she suffered as the result of a hit-and-run accident.

The accident led to her right leg being partially amputated.

The incident occurred on October 24 along Paul Kruger Road, near the Modderbee Prison, at around 7.30pm.

The teen’s family is yearning for justice as it is painful for them to see their daughter going through such a drastic life change at such a young age.

Samantha’s leg was amputated due to severe trauma to the limb and poor blood flow.

Her mother, Medium Ndlovu, said her daughter is a sports fanatic but now her dream of being a professional soccer player has been shattered.

“She is really struggling to adjust. However, we are optimistic that she will overcome this because she is a strong child and we always support her with whatever she needs,” said Ndlovu.

“I hope that the police will be able to find whoever did this to my child so that he or she can rot in jail – although that will not bring back my child’s leg.”

She added that they had big hopes for Samantha but now her self-esteem has been crushed and she has lost hope of leading a normal life.

The family needs help to make their home more comfortable for Samantha as their shack is a bit small.

Ndlovu said Samantha cannot move freely with her crutches as there isn’t enough space inside the house.

“I would really appreciate anyone who can help us as I’m a single mother of three who’s trying to make ends meet for my children,” she said.

After almost three weeks in hospital, the Dumehlezi Primary School learner is now home with her grandmother, Enette Ndlovu, in Soweto, as she continues with her recovery.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said they urge anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that may assist with the investigations to come forward.

Sekele added that on the day of the incident, Samantha was making her way from Daveyton to Kingsway with a friend.

“She was crossing the road when a vehicle travelling at high speed knocked her over.

“The two teens didn’t the see the make of the vehicle as it was dark already,” she said.

Her friend managed to get help nearby and Samantha was transported to hospital.

The teen doesn’t recall much about the accident except crossing the road and waking up in hospital.
