Have a heart for the elderly this Christmas
The initiative was started by three sisters who wanted to make a difference in the life of the elderly over Christmas
The TenderHeart Foundation is appealing for donations of gifts for the elderly and has a drop-off point for these in Benoni, as well as in Edenvale, Kensington, Lambton and Primrose.
One of the founders of the annual Christmas Cracker project, Lornette Joseph, explained it started six years ago when her and her sisters, Coral Bowler and Mandy Whitehead, decided to make Christmas a little brighter for the elderly with a special gift.
In the first year, the sisters and their families bought 35 gifts for residents of Elandvallei Home for the Aged in Primrose, and today the project gives over 300 gifts to the elderly in different old age homes.
“This project is not only about the gifts,” Lornette said. “It is about sharing love and kindness and about spending a few precious moments with residents, sharing an ice cream or a laugh.”
Their target is to reach 450 elderly this year.
What you can donate (donations cut-off is December 16):
• Toothpaste and toothbrush
• Face cloth and soap
• Aqueous cream
• Vaseline
• Deodorant (male and female)
• An item of clothing (socks, hankies, gloves)
• Optional: a little gift like a pen, notebook, broach, glasses holder or magazines.
The drop-off point for Benoni is ASM House, 6 Malherbe Street, Rynfield, (Sally) and all donations must be placed in a plastic bag.
