Damages caused by the hailstorm

The Northmead Bowling Club was not spared and parts of the ceiling collapsed as water leaked through the roof.

Benoni was hit by a massive hailstorm on February 26 that had caused damage to homes and vehicles.

The Northmead Bowling Club was not spared and parts of the ceiling collapsed as water leaked through the roof.

Ward 27 Clr Lornette Joseph assessed the damage on February 28 and the chairperson of the club, Des Day, explained the building was flooded and the ceilings and carpets damaged.

The club is 83 years old. Day said the gutters “have not been cleaned in years” – which he believes could have been a contributing factor to the collapse of the ceiling.

Joseph explained she would have to lay a claim with the council insurance for the damage and highlighted that this would not be something that will happen overnight as there is a process which needs to be followed.

Commenting on the flooding of roads on Friday, Joseph, who herself was on the road at the time the hail hit, said a lack of maintenance of stormwater drains is a major contributing factor.

While most residents had to deal with the water damages, residents in Western Extension experienced a power outage for over 24 hours that day.

Ward 73 Clr Sinethemba Matiwane said the storm tripped many street poles, resulting in outages, and debris washing into stormwater drains caused blockages.
