Best poem wins R1 000 in Youth Month poetry competition

The judges want original poetry in stanzas that sparkle and in verses that show them a new view of the times we’re living through.

Youth poetry awakens us to a different experience of the world.

The young are often unexpectedly wise. Their unusual wit makes us laugh and gasp, stop and stare, think and thank our lucky stars.

In Youth Month 2021, the Avbob Poetry mini-competition invites young poets for the second time to send two poems in English that are out of the ordinary, whatever that means to you. If you are 18 years old or younger you may enter and the theme is centred on Covid-19.

The judges want to read about your experience of the pandemic.

This might include your wonders and wanderings, your warrior words or earth worries.

They want original poetry in stanzas that sparkle, in verses that show them a new view of the times we’re living through; judges want lines that live on in their minds long after they’ve finished reading.

If you are 18 or younger, grab a pen and paper and fill every line till your poem is done. Let your thoughts erupt on the page or your handy device.

Work your imaginative magic. Show the judges what you have come through during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rules:

• The competition closes on June 23 and is open to any South African citizen who is 18 years and younger.

• Entrants younger than 18 must have a parent’s permission to enter.

• Poets may enter up to two poems in English, reflecting on their experiences of the Covid-19 pandemic.

• Entries will only be accepted by email at social@avbobpoetry.co.za

• The first-placed poem wins R1 000, the second R700 and the third R300.

• Winners will be announced on July 21 via Avbob Poetry’s social media channels and through a press release.

• Read and accept the mini-competition rules on the Avbob Poetry website: www.avbobpoetry.co.za/Blog/View/68
