Hope and Help Foundation, established in 2020, is hoping to make a positive difference in many lives.

The organisation started with one person recognising the need for immediate help in Actonville during lockdown.
This led to the provision of food hampers.

According to Parish Bhana, secretary and board member of the foundation, this gesture sparked an interest in other individuals who started working as a collective to feed the needy during this time.

“The Feed a Family Whatsapp group was created to help this effort. Individuals reached out to their personal and collective networks, specifically on social media, to pool resources, funds and other donations. We received help from individuals locally and internationally.

“After the second hamper campaign, it was recognised that a formal collective with proper governance and structure could achieve more benefits efficiently, hence the founding of the voluntary association with a membership and constitution.”

The foundation packs and distributes food hampers to families in need in the Actonville, Wattville, Villa Liza, Barcelona, Kensington, and Reiger Park areas.

To date, 18 food hamper campaigns have distributed approximately 5 950 hampers.

The initial hampers were provided by a local supplier and all subsequent hampers have been individually packed (contents bought from fresh food markets and other suppliers) by members of the foundations and volunteers.

“With the closure of the Ekurhuleni Food Bank, the constant presence of Covid-19 and the continued dire economic situation that some members of the communities find themselves in, this project will be ongoing for at least another 12 months.”

To sustain the distribution of the food hampers, funds are required to buy the food and other resources (such as transportation and packing materials).

The organisation is appealing to the public to make donations so that they can continue to make a difference in people’s lives.
