Organisations create awareness in Benoni

The Benoni SANBS had target reach of 100 people and were well on their way to reaching their goal when the City Times spoke to them at around noon.

The Benoni Monkey and Bird Park played host to three organisations recently in aid of those who need blood and Mighty Mack.

Present organisations were SANBS, Healthy Hearing and the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR).

The Benoni SANBS had a target reach of 100 people and were well on their way to reaching their goal when the City Times spoke to them at around noon.

The other two organisations chose to attend to create awareness for Mackenzie Friedman (known as Mighty Mack).

The five-month-old was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia on May 12.

Audiologist Petrus Swart from Healthy Hearing in Boksburg said the free screening was just a way to get people to attend and hear more about Mackenzie.

Luzanne Gomes (donor recruiter) at SABMR explained that cotton swabs are taken to find a match for someone in need of stem cells.

“There is only one of 100 000 that can be a match so finding a match is rare,” she explained.

“If someone is a match, we contact you and then you take an injection for five days which will increase your stem cells.

“Once you have enough, we place you on a machine that will draw out the excess stem cells for the person in need.”
