The case against a couple who was arrested for cultivation and dealing in dagga was postponed at the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on July 2 for further investigation.
The pair remains in police custody and will reappear in court on August 27.
The couple, aged 30 and 41, was arrested in their home in Balfour Avenue, Benoni South, on June 30.
Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said the arrest was made by the Ekurhuleni District Tactical Team with the assistance of the SAPS highway patrollers.
“The officers received a tip-off that there were drugs at the house. However, when police arrived at the house, they found it was a dagga lab,” said Sekele.
“The couple said they use the dagga for personal use, but they didn’t have any documentation to prove their statement.”
Sekele said when police searched the property, they found seven dagga trees, 11 bags of dagga, one dustbin full of dagga, two bags of compost (50kg), a dehumidifier, two HPS 1000w grow lamps, 49 loose jiffy-7c pallets and other equipment.
The spokesperson added that they thank the community for the tip-off and may they continue helping them fight crime in the area.
The case was opened at the Benoni Police Station.
