Northfield Methodist Church becomes official vaccination site

The vaccination site officially opened to the public on July 26. They will open Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 15:00.

The Northfield Methodist Church has partnered with the Northmead Clinic to become an official Covid-19 vaccination site.

The vaccination site officially opened to the public on July 26.

They will open Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 15:00.

Jackie Hayter, the church’s communications officer, said one practical way for the church to serve the Benoni community is to be a Covid-19 vaccination site.

They are also proud of the John Wesley Community Centre (JWCC) in Etwatwa, a mission and outreach project of the Northfield Methodist Church.

“Those who serve at the centre have a heart focused on caring for the vulnerable and empowering the community.

“Our range of programmes are vast, from gymnastics and chess classes to Saturday classes where we teach children from the community and help them with homework,” said Hayter.

“We also have other projects that are held at JWCC, in partnership with the Department of Social Development, such as home-based care. We have 20 Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) staff and three social workers who assist with caring for the vulnerable in the Daveyton and Etwatwa community.”

Hayter said their EPWP staff from JWCC will be on site at the church, partnering with the healthcare workers of

Northmead Clinic and Northfield staff and volunteers to be of assistance at the vaccination site.

JWCC centre manager Mampho Mbethe said they are excited to help out at the site.

“This means doing something beneficial for the community, while those at the centre can learn new skills. With this experience we will be able to tell the next generation about Covid-19 and how the vaccine brought hope the community,” said Mbethe.

Department of Health assistant director for nursing in Benoni and Brakpan Refiloe Sapie explained how the vaccination process will work.

She said those who have registered online may just walk in. She stressed it is important to register on the EVDS vaccination site to make the process smoother.

“When the community arrives, they will be welcomed by the JWCC volunteers who will then show them where to park. The entrance will be on Hurricane Avenue.

“Then they will be screened while in the waiting area before entering the building. Administration will also be done to capture the vaccination details on the EVDS system,” she said.

“After this, you will enter the building and wait to be called by the nurses who will use a pink flag to call the next person for the jab.

“People are asked to proceed to the observation area where they are required to wait for a minimum of 15 minutes to monitor for any possible adverse reactions to the vaccine.”

As a precautionary measure, there is an emergency area to assist anyone who may experience a reaction to the vaccine.
