Apricot Tree grateful for help

Abby Reason said that the centre is specifically aimed at providing real care and support to children with severe needs.

While there is an outpour of love for those in need, especially during the pandemic, the Apricot Tree in Northmead wants to thank the community for sharing some of that love with them.

“Just over 10 years ago, under the leadership of a few parents with a long-term vision to do something about this need, Apricot Tree Centre was born,” said the NPO’s principal, Abby Reason.

Reason said that the centre is specifically aimed at providing real care and support to children with severe needs.

“The centre has grown over the years and now provides the mix of therapy, schooling, and general care, that some 30 children and young adults need to achieve the best that they each can in their lives. We invite you to take a minute and visit our website to see the centre in action,” she said.

“Apricot Tree has focused heavily over the years on fundraising to offset the sizeable costs associated with the care for such diverse special needs children and now young adults as well,” Reason explained.

“And we have managed to grow and provide the care levels needed over the years with the aid of wonderful and dedicated staff, committed parents and families, and with ongoing support from a group of amazingly supportive people within our broader community.

“We as a centre have been truly blessed during these trying times.”

The NPO hosted a golf day that was supported by loyal Apricot Tree supporters, as well as new supporters.

“[It] is always uplifting to see the awareness of our centre grow in our Benoni community,” the principal said.

“Apricot Tree’s greatest dream is to continue to provide a quality service to special needs families whether it be improving and growing for our current families or to assist the members of the community who need their children to attend a centre like ours.”

How the community can get involved:
• Sponsor a special needs child’s monthly centre fee fully/partially.
• Help us finish our outside area with a sandpit cover and rubber flooring.
• Help us finish our sensory room with wall padding and fibre optic lights.
• Help us build a respite centre for our young adults who need a place to stay for an evening or weekend.

Future events:
• Ladies tea (September 4)
• Monthly activity boxes put together by the young adults
• Pet boxes will be available for purchase in September and proceeds will go to the SPCA.
