Benoni says goodbye to Des Day
He played bowls since the age of 16 and enjoyed cooking when he had time.
Chairperson of the Northmead Bowling Club Desmond John Day (58) died of a heart attack on May 24.
Desmond (Des) was born in Benoni and was a life-long resident, attending Tom Newby and Benoni High schools.
He was the chairperson of Northmead Bowling Club for nearly three years and his wife, Alta, said that bowls was his passion and a big part of his life.
“He still wanted to do so much for this sport and members. He recruited more than 40 new and social members for the club, even during Covid-19,” said Alta.

Desmond was a Farrarmere resident at the time of his death, and a member of Eastern Gauteng Bowls where he took part as competition secretary and selector and was also a member of the Bowls South Africa Tournament committee.
As a youngster, Des did karate, Judo and even trained newcomers.
He played bowls since the age of 16 and enjoyed cooking when he had time.
Des is known by his friends and family as the guy who would always try to help other people as he wanted everybody to be happy and enjoy life.
They knew him as a gentleman, very tidy, believed in good principles, enjoyed playing with his grandchildren, as well as an avid animal lover.
Working full time as the chairperson of the Northmead Bowling Club, Des still had time to show love to his wife, his three step-children (one of whom died on August 16 this year), his sister Beverley Charnock and her three sons and six grandchildren who remember him.
“Des was a part of my life for 23 years when he was taken away so suddenly and unexpectedly. I will always treasure the good times we had. I miss your jokes, teasing, meals cooked with so much love and the fact that you would help with caring for your mom and mine. May you rest in peace my love, I will always miss you,” said Alta.
Des will also be remembered by many all over the country as a master bowler as he won several gold, silver and bronze medals and titles, in the club, district and national competitions.
